creative stitchers - irma bolley, 1965

i was struck by the mix of materials and textures used in this wall hanging and pillows. burlap, velvet and corduroy were used for the appliques and the stiches were done with both floss and rug yarn.

these were made by irma bolley who created many pieces for mc call's magazine. she believed that artists should be able to work in a variety of media. irma is shown here in her studio translating one of her oil paintings (titled "spring thaw") into an embroidered wall hanging.
