midtown plaza mall, rochester, new york, 1963
we recently went to the opening of a group show that a friend was a part of. there was a room full of large scale photographs that were close ups of dioramas that depicted various international settings. they all looked a little worse for wear and appeared to be part of a bigger display in what looked to be a shopping mall - so of course i had to find out more. i ended up meeting the photographer and he explained that it was part of a big clock in the center of a mall. while i totally respect his choice of subject matter it was frustrating to me not to see the entire thing. so of course i immediately went home and did some research and boy was i delighted to see the entire thing. please check out this video i yanked off of you tube. and i totally forget where i found the above picture - so thanks to whoever i "borrowed" it from.
Hey! I've seen that clock hundreds of times! I'm from Rochester, originally (and trying to get back there where all our family is). The clock was just removed from the mall, actually, which is being torn down (or turned into something new or whatever). The clock is called the Clock of Nations and is being moved to the Rochester Airport before it ends up someplace new.
How funny to see it featured here!
(I found your blog via Elsie Marley, btw)
