california cooks!, 1970

ok i must admit that i bought this because of the cover. and i'm so glad i did. i adore the author photo (taken in an orange grove, no less) of "california home economists" betty and rowena. take a very close look at their jewelry - it's very modernist. and of course i love the illustrations and typography.

california cooks! was published by the ward ritchie press. strarting out in the 30s ward ritchie ran a very prolific business and specialized in art books, cook books as well as books about local history. over the holidays i happened to read the book LA's early moderns that feaures ward ritchie as well as other key figures in the world of art, architecture and photography.
