i'm sure you remember me mentioning a few months back about what an honor it was to be a contributor to kayte's new book applique your way. i am so excited because today is kayte's stop here on my blog for her "blog book tour".
for my project kayte asked me to do something with a vintage clutch bag. i had so much fun working on it!
i asked kayte to tell us a little bit about her book
cathy: why applique?kayte: i felt like appliqué just deserved a little more craft cred. a lot of people have told me that they bought my book and realized that they have dabbled in appliqué but never even realized it. for some reason people think appliqué is really dated or fussy and can't be modern. i guess i just wanted people to know that appliqué is pretty darn cool.
cathy: what gave you the inspiration/idea for the project you invited me to do?
kayte: well, I knew that we both loved enid collins and i thought it would be really fun to do a spin on one of her purses. you just seemed like the perfect person to do that! also, i loved that this project was no-sew! i wanted to have a range of projects for people who don't have sewing machines.
cathy: why do you think crafters find so much inspiration from the work of enid collins?kayte: she had such a great sense of color and whimsy! i loved all the mix of materials that she used in her designs- jewels, felt and trims- and i think crafters can really relate to that. plus you know we crafters love an animal motif and she did them so well!
cathy: what are some other sources for vintage inspiration that you can point us in the direction of?kayte: i love the better, homes and gardens craft books and the golden hands magazines. every time i go thrifting i look for old craft books and booklets- they are usually really inexpensive, maybe because people don't realize how awesome they are! i also love all of those '60s and '70s books about the needlecraft- you know the ones that are filled with pages of amazing macramé wall hangings and fabric sculptures. those are the best!
also, i spend a huge amount of time hunting for vintage clothing and accessories- Ii love the embellishing and attention to the details in vintage goods and it really inspires a lot of my work. right now i am into vintage hats and any jewelry that features bows.
cathy: thanks so much kayte!
(please go here for a list of the other stops on the tour)
love the hot pink of the bird against the light clutch!

I just gasped when I saw this! The best Enid Collins inspired design I have seen. I would love to applique this bird on my vanity mirror.
