not unlike the work of lucienne day the fabrics designed by alvin lustig were heavily copied (in both good and bad ways) in the 80s - especially that 3rd one. i think it's a good idea every so often to take a look at how it was done right in the first place.
leslie photographed the homes of designers such as george nakashima, harry bertoia, eve zeisel and the ackermans just to name a few. she shot all of the homes using available light and did absolutly no styling (with the exception of removing a few household products that had visible brand names). the results are just breathtaking. don't get me wrong i love photos that are styled (there is nothing wrong with a few flowers and bowl of lemons here and there) but there is something that is just so refreshing about looking at these homes the way the people actually live.
meg will be signing her new book this thursday at rare device in san francisco. my project from the book will be on display. i am so bummed i can't be there in person but it looks like many of the other contributors will be there.
if you can't make it to the opening you can purchase the book from the rare device online shop (and while you're there take a look around at all of the other wonderful stuff they have).
my pal chantale of the fabulous mount fuji general store is curating a show at the ace in palm springs that opens this next saturday. it's all part of a bigger celebration that the ace is hosting (as you see on this flyer!). i am pleased to announce that i will be "the token LA artist" alongside artists from the joshua tree area.
Welcome! Today my blog is the stop on the Wee Wonderfuls book tour. Thanks for stopping by.
A few years ago when I was just first discovering craft blogs and friend told me to check out Wee Wonderfuls. Hillary's blog was one of the blogs that inspired me to start my own. Her vintage inspiration is what got me hooked.
Her new book is so super cute. The projects are just amazing - you're going to want to make them for yourself and to give as gifts. I just love the photography and the way the projects and propped (of course with lots of cool vintage stuff) and styled.
I just love how Hillary uses vintage fabrics in many of her projects. There's something about the way she uses the fabrics that make everything that much more personal and special - that way the dolls become something that you are going to want to hold on to and cherish for years.
I "sat down" with Hillary and asked her a few questions:
C: What era most inspires you? H: 70s
C: Might this be based on family memories? H: You betcha!
C: What vintage things do you collect? H: Books, toys, fabric, furniture, and holiday decor.
C: Where are your favorite spots to find vintage things? H: Garage sales and I love armchair garage saling on ebay
C: How does vintage inspire your work? H: The colors, the styles, the sweet little faces, the myth of a simplier life :)
Thanks Hillary!
Don't miss this video! You are probably going to watch it at least 2 or 3 times in a row.
The kits are back and I have redesigned the packaging. I got to thinking that the previous packaging was wasteful since it was a plastic bag. I think the best part of this new design is that everything comes in a natural muslin bag that is great for storage or crafting on the go.
i grew up in southern california during the 60s + 70s so i can’t help but be influenced by the crafts + design of that time. please think of this blog as a sketchbook where i share some of these influences.
i have met many people and made alot of new friends in the course of writing this blog. opportunities I would have never imagined possible have also come my way. i want to thank all of you for your continued love and support. xo

new books mentioned in this blog
i am acquainted with a few publicists who work for publishers that publish craft and design books. they occasionally send me review copies of their latest offerings. if i choose to do so i sometimes make mention of these books if i think the readers of this blog might be interested in hearing what i think about them. in some cases these are books that i have contributed to and of course want to lend a hand in the promotion of them.
