an early education in fashion: lucy + ethel's burlap dresses

when i was in new york this past june i went to the alexander mc queen savage beauty show at the met. having taken the red eye we arrived at 5:30 am, dropped our bags off, grabbed some coffee and headed straight to the exhibition. the show was breathtaking and i felt very emotional as i looked at everything - of course in part due to the lack of sleep but also because i was surrounded by a staggering amount of amazing craftmanship. his use of materials and the manner in which the clothes and accessories were executed was just beyond perfection.

i became particularly transfixed on an embroidered burlap dress. i could have stood there all day and looked at it. i really really wanted to be able to get into the glass case it was displayed in and have a closer look. but no such luck.

for this post i wanted to use a image of that dress. but since i did not purchase the catalog i was not able to scan an image. i thought it would be really easy to find on a google image search. but there was nothing. pages and pages of practically everything else from the show but no burlap dress.

surprisingly my search for "alexander mc queen savage beauty burlap dress" yielded the image you see here. it was the third image on the first page. and no it was not from a post where someone was speculating as to whether or not mc queen was influenced by "i love lucy". it was a just a TV fan blog - a post about the episode when lucy was in paris and really really wanted a "jacques marcel original". ricky of course said no, lucy started a hunger strike, hilarity ensued and there's a really good punchline at the end.

perhaps me running across this photo happened for a reason. i loved that show when i was little. the episodes where they traveled to places like hollywood and paris were favorites and made a huge impact on me. i can't say for sure but just maybe that episode of "i love lucy" is what originally sparked my interest in fashion. come to think of it i watched "i love lucy" way before i was ever given a barbie - so there you go.
