i just posted a few in my etsy shop.

paper flowers, 1967

Paperflowers

"beautiful flowers bloom profusely, each in their own season, only to die until next year. lovely flowers made with dennison crepe paper - realistic or whimisical but always artistically exciting - bloom agian and again at any time. these paper perennials can make spring and summer last all year long."

here's a preview of some of the items i'll be selling on sunday at felt club. i'm sure it's no big surprise that i have a ton of vintage craft supplies. i thought it might be fun to try out a few kits.

each kit has everything you need to make loomed flowers - a loom (or looms), instruction book and 3 skiens of ribbon straw (but you can also use yarn). everything is either vintage or new old stock.

(sorry for the sucky photos. the reflection form the vinyl was a bit of a problem.)

just look at all of the fun autumnal projects you can make with ribbon straw or yarn using a flower loom!

"enjoy crochet with teijin custom yarn with pearl-like luster. because of it's softness, and ideal amount of resistance as well as bulkiness, you can knit or crochet with ease and get a fine finish. it is free from thread-splitting and napping, and you are free from ironing or washing problems." how could you ask for anything more?

there was no date given on what i think is probably my new favorite craft booklet of all time. i was able to date it by the magazines the brilliant stylist chose to use for the back cover photos. that's the feburary 1966 issue of "seventeen" magazine.

LA county fair crafts building, late 50s

Aleene_la_county_fair

aleene jackson (of "tacky glue" fame) along with fellow craft pioneer hazel pearson orchestrated the design and construction of a permanent building to showcase crafts and hobbies at the LA county fair.

the tradition continues today and i am so proud to join the ranks of all of the crafty ladies who have shown their work at the LA county fair. tomorrow, as part of the series of felt club craft classes i will be demonstrating how to make pincushions based on a project i found in a 1965 issue of "family circle" magazine.

crafts are in the "tapestry" building (that's what they call it now) which is under the grandstand and kitty corner to the deep fried twinkie stand. my demo is from 11am - 4 pm. i will also be selling kits so you can make the project at home.

wish me luck and i hope to see you there!

old stock hazel's ribbon straw

look what i just purchased on ebay! this is going to come in real handy since i've been using my "flower flair" loom to make a whole bunch of ribbon straw flowers. i've put a few of them on some of the mushroom pincushions that i will be selling at the bazaar bizarre next weekend.

it's suddenly all about loom flowers! after my post yesterday i ran out to the craft shop to buy some ribbon straw because i decided that some of my mushroom pincushions really should decorated with ribbon straw flowers instead of felt. lo & behold as soon as i got home i found that sarah of knitting-and.com had sent me a link to her amazing (& quite extensive) small looms tutorial.

of course i'm going to make my flowers using some of my vintage looms. pictured here is the back cover of the instruction booklet and 4 looms from the "flower flair" kit by mon tricot that i found at my favorite old school craft store.
